Staging Head and Neck Cancers (8th Edition)

Recorded presentation form NCRA's 2017 annual conference in Washington, DC presented by Michelle Williams, MD.

Squamous cell carcinomas encountered in the head and neck region and differences in etiology and prognosis are increasingly recognized based on the subsite of tumor origin. As a result, the pharynx staging chapter has been revised in the eighth edition to include three separate chapters: nasopharynx, oropharynx (non-HPV associated), and hypopharynx. Dr. Williams will discuss these changes and the new chapter specific to HPV, associated oropharyngeal carcinomas. She will also provide a review of anatomy to determine the correct site of origin for staging and related histologic factors.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review head and neck anatomy critical to ensure accurate staging.
  • Compare the seventh and eighth editions to understand how lymph node extranodal extension and tumor HPV status contribute to the biology of head and neck cancers.
  • Learn the new registry collection variables for the eighth edition for head and neck cancers.
