Virtual Fundamentals of Abstracting (FOA) Workshop

The virtual Fundamentals of Abstracting (FOA) Workshop includes four, three-hour sessions scheduled over four days from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM ET. See below for dates. The faculty will provide a theoretical basis for the tasks and activities associated with abstracting and a review of the topics most important to abstractors, including Solid Tumor Rules and ICD-O, AJCC TNM Staging, Abstracting Data, STORE Manual, Summary Stage 2018, Extent of Disease (EOD), Grade, and Site-Specific Data Items. The workshop is designed for cancer registry employees with between six months to two years of experience. Attendees should have knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and cancer registry resources. The workshop is foundational and is not eligible for CE credits. Recordings available to the attendees through December 31, 2024.

Instructors

Donna Gress, RHIT, ODS-C Instructor

Donna Gress is the Cancer Staging and Registry Operations Manager for the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). Gress was the technical editor of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual 8th Edition, the lead author of the manual’s Chapter 1 Principles of Cancer Staging, and an author of AJCC Version 9 Cervix Uteri. She is a past president of NCRA and received the NCRA Distinguished Member Award and the NCRA Educational Achievement Award. Gress served as an editor of the NCRA textbook, Cancer Registry Management Principles and Practices for Hospitals and Central Registries, Fourth Edition.

Jennifer Ruhl, MSHCA, RHIT, CCS, ODS Instructor

Jennifer Ruhl is a Public Health Analyst at the NCI Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program and serves as a member of the Data Quality Team, which is responsible for identifying needs, setting priorities, and managing projects related to data collection and procedure manuals. She is also the Chair of the NAACCR Site-Specific Data Items (SSDI) Workgroup and has been instrumental in developing supporting materials for implementation and working with other standard setters.

Juliet Wilkins, MA, ODS-C Instructor

Juliet Wilkins received her ODS credential in 2014. After serving ten years in the registry at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, she transitioned to her current position as Training Manager at the Arizona Cancer Central Registry. Wilkins served two terms as president of the Cancer Registry Association of Arizona and is also the former Chair of the NCRA Education Committee. She continues to serve on the Committee and contributes to NCRA webinars, workshops, and online courses.
Sara Biese, RHIT, ODS Instructor

Sara Biese is the Program Director and faculty for the NCRA Accredited Cancer Information Management Associate Degree and Certificate Programs at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in Fennimore, WI. Biese has been the Chair of the NCRA Education Foundation for several years and has also served on the NCRA Council on Certification.
