Texas Training: Coding Biliary Tract Cancers

Because they are closely related, both anatomically and in the way they are treated, biliary tract cancers, like cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer, present considerable challenges to registrars when compiling the case abstract. Dr. Gusani will address what differentiates the diagnoses and highlight challenges in these cases and in intra/extra bile ducts.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the anatomy of the biliary tract structures.
  • Better understand the differences in diagnoses for biliary tract cancers.
  • Outline the complexity of staging intra/extra bile duct diseases.

Niraj Gusani, MD, MS, FACS, is a boardcertified general surgeon and fellowshiptrained surgical oncologist with more than 15 years of experience in all aspects of cancer surgery. A former tenured professor and an active researcher, his areas of expertise include liver, bile ducts and gallbladder diseases, and pancreatic diseases. Dr. Gusani received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
