Introduction to Genetics and the Nomenclature for Cancer Registrars (2025)

Gillian Howell, PhD, ODS-C will provide an advanced introduction to genetics for cancer registrars with the goal of advancing knowledge and understanding of the role genetics plays in cancer data and cancer surveillance. Gillian will address the information contained in the genetic code and discuss types of gene mutations and how they can influence treatment decisions and patient outcomes.

Review the definition of the genetic code.
Provide information on the roles of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes.
Illustrate the role of genetics in cancer metastasis.

Gillian Howell, PhD, CTR Instructor

Gillian Howell has a PhD in Biochemistry and was a cancer researcher early in her career. She is credited with 42 publications on the topics of her research, including the study of disease progression and the investigation of therapeutic agents to target colon and pancreatic cancer. Gillian later chose to apply her knowledge and experience in the field of cancer data and surveillance to earn the Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) credential and transition to the cancer registry. Previously with the Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Gillian is now with the cancer registry at Baptist Health in South Florida. She has been serving on the NCRA Education Committee for several years and is always willing to share her knowledge in cancer genetics (and epigenetics) with the cancer registry community through presentations, webinars, and papers.
