Disease Site: Bile Duct/Liver

Dr. Cherif Boutros will provide a detailed review of two bile duct/liver cases. Denise Harrison, BS, CTR will outline the AJCC staging based on information from Dr. Boutros (clinical/pathological or post-therapy clinical/pathological). In addition, she will review for each case the Summary Stage, Surgical Codes, Site-Specific Data Items, Grade, Extent of Disease, and Solid Tumor Rules.

Learning Objectives:

Demonstrate how to assign stage (AJCC 8th Edition TNM and Summary Stage) for bile duct/liver cancers.
Decide Surgical Codes, Site-Specific Data Items (SSDIs) and Grade for bile duct/liver cancers.
Determine the application of the Solid Tumor Rules for bile duct/liver cancers.

Cherif Boutros, MD, Msc, FACS Instructor

Cherif Boutros MD, MSc, FACS, is medical director the Tate Cancer Center; chair of surgical oncology at UM BWMC and professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Boutros received his MBChB (M.D. equivalent) from University of Alexandria, Egypt and completed surgical training in Paris, France where he also obtained the Diploma of Surgical Specialty and a Master of surgical science. He had a surgical residency in NY Presbyterian Columbia University / Newark Beth Israel-Monmouth, NJ in General Surgery and Surgical Oncology fellowship in Roger Williams Medical Center/Boston University. Dr. Boutros received additional advanced training in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at the internationally renowned hepatobiliary center at Paul Brousse Hospital, France. He is the author of multiple publications and book chapters in the field of gastrointestinal surgical oncology and had multiple presentations in national and international meetings on innovative minimally invasive surgical techniques for complex abdominal cancers. He is the principal investigator of the LiverMetSurvey at the University of Maryland, an international study for patients who receive surgery for hepatic colorectal metastasis. He is also the principal investigator of the irreversible electroporation study for unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer.
Denise C. Harrison, BS, CTR Instructor

Denise Harrison is the Education Board Director for the NCRA and former Program Director for the NCRA Accredited Cancer Information Management Program at Santa Barbara City College. She is currently serving as a private consultant for hospitals and HIM companies, the California Cancer Registry, and the Texas Cancer Registry.
